Principal's Message

Voyager Families,

I hope you are all enjoyed a restful and relaxing spring break. The weather has been crazy and definitely kept us on our toes, but I am so proud of our students coming in each day ready to learn!

IXL Online Math Program: We are excited about this opportunity for kids at KGJ! Students in grades K-5 all received IXL login subscriptions through their homeroom teachers. IXL helps students gain fluency and confidence in math! IXL helps students master essential skills at their own pace through fun and interactive questions, built-in support, and motivating awards. I want to encourage families to use this program at home throughout this school year and this summer. I believe active participation will result in student growth. Please contact your student’s homeroom teacher if you are having difficulties accessing IXL at home.

SBA Testing: A reminder that end-of-the-year SBA assessments in grades 3-5 run from April 19th – June 1st. Teachers will communicate individual grade-level testing dates/schedules to families as our testing window approaches. Students are tested in ELA and Math in grades 3-5 and Science in grade 5. It is important that students arrive at school on time, well-rested, and are ready to show what they know. Thank you for your continued support in helping Katherine G. Johnson Elementary maintain a high level of academic excellence.

STEAM Fest: Our STEAM Fest will be celebrated Wednesday, June 14th from 5-7pm. What a special day this will be as we come together as a school/community honoring project-based learning school-wide. More details to come!

Volunteer Process: This a reminder for parents/family members to please go to the Bethel District Website to register to be a classroom volunteer. Any parents working in classrooms or accompanying grade levels on field trips must be an approved volunteer through the district. Please plan ahead as volunteer clearance may take multiple weeks.

Administrative Changes: I want to communicate that I have accepted a principal position closer to home next year and will not be the principal at Katherine G. Johnson Elementary. Voyager families are free to share this news with their students as there will be no formal announcement made at school. The district will begin the process of finding the next principal at KGJ in the coming weeks. It has been and will continue to be an honor to serve as principal of this outstanding school! We are blessed with an exceptional staff and wonderful students and families. I am excited for the continued success of KGJ moving forward.

Student Support: The staff at Katherine G. Johnson Elementary would like to continue to emphasize ways for parents to partner with the school and support your students:

1. Have your student to school prepared and on time each day.

2. Check your student’s backpack and discuss its contents as well as your student’s day.

3.  Initiate communication with your student’s teacher to ensure a positive school experience.

I want to emphasize that educating our students is a partnership with the school and home. I would like to encourage parents to take opportunities to get involved and share this journey with us. Feel free to contact the Katherine G. Johnson office staff or me if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks for being part of the KGJ family; here is to a great end to the school year!
